Hi guys, this is the process of how I made a latch hook rug. I changed the carpet in my room to flooring. I wanted to add an area rug but there werenāt many options for me to choose from. So, I figured why not make one. It could be whatever size I wanted, which at the time was a 4 1/2ā x 5 1/2ā rug. I went on Amazon and ordered 2 mesh canvases, latch hooks, and 10 rolls of yarn. I also bought a 5āx8ā rug pad from Ross. Make sure that your yarn isnāt too thin. I cut pieces of yarn to be 2 1/2ā. I would cut a couple of 20ā pieces, cut it in half making it 10ā, and cut it in half 2 more times making it 2 1/2ā.
I found a better method after my 6th roll of yarn. I cut 2 pieces of cardboard at 2 1/4ā x 4ā. I cut a smaller piece at 1 1/4ā x 3ā. I glued the smaller piece between the 2 strips. Then, I wrapped my yarn around it and held the yarn down before cutting it. To attach the yarn, I used the rows of the canvas that looked more durable. I left 4 rows on all sides. Place the hook under and up 1 of the squares. The latch should be open. With the yarn under the hook, align the ends to find the center. Pull the hook down slightly, so that the yarn can go under the latch.
Bring the yarn to 1 side, up, and across. Next, pull the hook down and the ends of the yarn should go through the loop created. It should look like a reverse lark's head knot. Continue doing this and make sure that all the knots face the same direction. Since I planned on making a large rug, I knew that I'd need to connect 2 pieces of mesh canvas. To speed up the process, hereās what I started doing. I aligned the ends of the yarn before placing the hook through it.
I faced my hook away from the other pieces of yarn, turned it slightly to catch the yarn and turned it back before pulling the hook through the loop. I attached 3 or 4 pieces of yarn, then pulled them all tight at once. After a roll of yarn, I realized that this would take months and I wouldnāt have enough yarn. So, I decided to make a runner rug, that would be a 5 1/2 ft x 1 1/2 ft. Halfway through making this, I ordered a shag area rug from Target. But I still wanted to finish this rug. So, this rug might end up going in another room. I also decided to add a design, but something not too busy.
I made double xās and double triangles. I also made this cross cross pattern. I later changed it because it didnāt seem like it matched the other 2 symbols. So, I made double diamonds. Itās like the other half of the double triangles and has the double xās in it. I connected the 2 canvases by overlapping the 4 rows. With a needle and thread, I combined them with a whip stitch. I stitched 2 rows and cut off the extra rows. Then, I attached the yarn through both layers. For the edges, I folded over 2 rows and sewed the 2 layers together using a whip stitch.
I cut the corners and overlapped the sides. You could do this step at the beginning of making your rug, if you already know how big youāre going to make it. Next, I latch hooked the 2 rows around all the sides. I ended using 9 rolls of yarn. You definitely should add a rug pad or some kind of grip for this, so that it doesnāt slide and hereās how it turned out. This took me a month to make. If you do decide try latch hooking, Iād suggest making a small rug or tapestry..

So one of the most common questionsĀ we get here at Catalina Rug is,Ā Ā how do I clean my rug without having to take itĀ to professional rug cleaning? So in this video,Ā Ā what we're gonna do is we're gonna show you thatĀ process of how you can clean up your rug at homeĀ Ā in a very lightweight fashion without the riskĀ of damaging the rug. And it will be good enoughĀ Ā to make your rug look cleaner and remove some ofĀ the dirt and it give you a little bit more timeĀ Ā before you will have to take it for professionalĀ rug cleaning. So the way we're gonna do this videoĀ Ā is first I'll show you what kind of equipmentĀ and materials you need is pretty basic stuff,Ā Ā and then I'll show you the process step by step.Ā So stick around and all that is coming up now.
All right, so to get started, let's go overĀ the materials you'll need to clean your rugĀ Ā at home. So you'll need a couple of cottonĀ towels, like these ones, preferably white,Ā Ā and make sure that they're clean. And you'llĀ need some sort of brush like this one hereĀ Ā that is gonna help you brush the pile of theĀ rug. And then you'll also need some sort ofĀ Ā soap similar to this one that we're using here.Ā This is a dishwashing foam.
And just make sureĀ Ā whatever product you're using doesn't haveĀ a bleach or anything that's gonna damage theĀ Ā rug. So here I just wanna show you a littleĀ bit of a closeup of each of these products.Ā Ā So basically this is the towel that we're using.Ā Here's a closeup of the brush that we're using,Ā Ā and then also the dish washing foamĀ that we're using to clean the rug. All right, so first, before we get started withĀ actually cleaning the rug, we're gonna go aheadĀ Ā and give it a nice vacuum.
First, we're gonnaĀ start with the top of the rug and make sureĀ Ā that we are vacuuming side to side. And also makeĀ sure to avoid vacuuming the fringes of the rugĀ Ā because that could damage the rug over time.Ā So once you're done with vacuuming the front,Ā Ā we're gonna go to the back. All right, so now thatĀ we've finished vacuuming the front of the rug,Ā Ā we're gonna flip the rug over andĀ vacuum the back. This is optional,Ā Ā but it really does help to remove some of theĀ dust and debris that have gone into the pile.Ā Ā And depending on the size of your rug, youĀ could use this trick where we are flippingĀ Ā half of the rug over and vacuuming one half.Ā And then once we're done vacuuming this half,Ā Ā we're gonna move on and vacuumĀ the other half of the rug.
All right, so now that we're done vacuuming theĀ rug, we're ready to start actually cleaning it.Ā Ā So we're gonna mix the soap with some water toĀ dilute it so that way it's not too strong. AndĀ Ā then just go ahead and take the towel and dip itĀ into the mixture and start gently wiping the rugĀ Ā and try to go with the direction of the pile.Ā You don't want to go too much against the pileĀ Ā because it's gonna get into the deeper parts ofĀ the pile and it's gonna get very wet. So you'reĀ Ā just trying to focus on cleaning the surface ofĀ the rug. And for this reason, you're gently wipingĀ Ā on top of the rug and just going with the pile,Ā as we're showing you here, and of course wheneverĀ Ā you feel like the towel is drying up, you couldĀ dip it back into the mixture to soak it up more. And for this step, I recommend doing this inĀ sections. So pick out one section of the rugĀ Ā and clean it first, and then move on to the otherĀ sections. And this really depends on the size ofĀ Ā your rug, but for example, for this rug, weĀ tried to clean it in four different sectionsĀ Ā and the size is around a four by six.
Now as youĀ can see here, our towel is starting to get dirtyĀ Ā from cleaning up just one part of the rug. AndĀ this rug is actually pretty clean to begin with,Ā Ā but you can definitely expect that as youĀ start doing this, your towel is gonna getĀ Ā very dirty. So go ahead and switch to a cleanĀ towel whenever your towel gets too dirtyĀ Ā cuz you don't want to be distributing that dirtĀ around the cleaner parts of the rug. So asĀ Ā far as cleaning the pile of the rug, that'sĀ pretty much the step that you have to take. And you'll notice that the pile of the rugĀ is gonna be dry within 30 minutes to an hourĀ Ā and we're really dampening the pile. We'reĀ not getting it soaking wet. So you shouldĀ Ā expect it to dry fairly quickly and you couldĀ feel the rug and just feel the pile of the rugĀ Ā to make sure that it's completely dry beforeĀ you start walking over it and using the rug.Ā Ā Now for the next step, we're gonna show you howĀ to clean the fringes of the rug.
And of courseĀ Ā this process is optional, but if you find thatĀ the fringes are dirty, then you could use thisĀ Ā process to clean them. All you need is a stick ofĀ wood or something that you could place underneathĀ Ā to place the fringes over. And you're gonna useĀ the same soap and water mixture that you createdĀ Ā along with the brush to clean the fringes.Ā And we're gonna show you how to do that next. All right, now that we have the stick in placeĀ and the fringes placed over it, you just takeĀ Ā the brush and dip it into the mixture that we haveĀ and then start soaking and brushing the fringesĀ Ā from the rug towards the end of the fringes.Ā And just make sure that the mixture gets niceĀ Ā and soaking into the fringe so that way theĀ fringes start to get soaking wet and you'reĀ Ā gonna go from one end of the rug to the other.Ā And then once you are complete with one side ofĀ Ā the fringes, you're gonna switch to the otherĀ side.
But do leave the stick of wood in placeĀ Ā because it allows the fringes to dry easier. So ifĀ you can use two sticks of wood for this process,Ā Ā that would be the best. Otherwise, weĀ recommend you wait for one side to dryĀ Ā before you work on the other side and move theĀ stick over to clean the other side of the rug. Alright, so that's how you can clean your hand-knotted rug at home and hopefully this will makeĀ Ā your rug look cleaner and remove some of theĀ dirt.
And this will allow you to wait a bitĀ Ā longer before you have to take it for professionalĀ rug cleaning. And just something to be cautiousĀ Ā about is to double check the products thatĀ you're using and look at the labels to makeĀ Ā sure it doesn't have any sort of bleach orĀ anything that could damage the rug. Also,Ā Ā you can check with your local professionalĀ rug cleaners about the type of productĀ Ā you're using to make sure that it's notĀ gonna hurt the rug. And if you enjoy thisĀ Ā content and you learn something from it,Ā then I invite you to like and subscribeĀ Ā and comment below in this video and check outĀ our playlist about rug care cuz we have a lotĀ Ā of different videos covering this topic.
AndĀ with that, I will see you in the next video.
